Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process or a study of evaluating the possible environmental impacts of a proposed project or development, taking into account inter-related socio-economic, cultural, and human health impacts.

EIA takes into consideration both beneficial and adverse consequences of the project. It makes sure that the effects are examined during the early phase of project planning and design.

In simple terms, EIA can be referred to as a ‘decision-making tool;’ as it helps in recognizing the probable environmental effects of the proposed project. In India, as mandated by policies, EIA is required for projects, depending on the project size and capacity.

As per the guidelines of “The Environment Impact Notification” of Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India dated 14th September 2006 – ‘Any person who desires to undertake the new project or expansion or modernization of any industry or project enlisted in schedule 1 of the notification, requires to submit an application to the Secretary, Ministry of Environment & Forests

New Delhi in the prescribed proforma to be accompanied by the Project report which inter-alia includes an Environmental Impact Assessment report including Environmental Management Plan & Details of Public hearing.
