Need Of Testing Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Need of Diesel Testing
  • When diesel exhausts, it emits a mixture of gases and fine particles. The primary pollutants emitted from diesel engines include- Particulate matter (PM), Carbon monoxide (CO), Nitrogen oxides (NOx), Hydrocarbons (HC), Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other chemicals that are classified as “hazardous air pollutants.” The diesel exhaust emission is therefore tagged as a major concern pertaining for both human health and environmental health.
  • Owing to the fast-paced world we live in, there are a few noble people who spare time to think and act upon the increasing concern of the toxic gases released into the air. And in the bid of working towards cleaner & greener alternatives, DEF has by far proven to be the best!

  • Since DEF is used in high-end industrial spaces and vehicles, the testing DEF has to undergo extensive testing to assure consistent quality. Because if not tested properly, the result can lead to-
    • Destructive effects on SCR catalyst performance
    • Premature catalyst deactivation
    • Lower fuel economy
    • Fouled pre-filters and injector nozzles

What Is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (AdBlue)

  • Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), which is popularly known as ‘AdBlue’ is a type of diesel that is used to reduce harmful gases that are being released into the atmosphere. It is a non-toxic diesel exhaust fluid that is made up of high purity urea and deionized. It’s odourless and non-toxic, and can potentially corrode metallic surfaces. The use of DEF is seen mostly in commercial spaces where the emission of flue gas is at its peak.
  • Having said that, DEF can be used in vehicles too, but that vehicle has to be a new diesel vehicle, which is equipped with an exhaust treatment system called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
  • SCR technology is one of the most cost-effective and fuel-efficient latest techniques, which is used to clean up diesel emissions.

    • Chromium
    • Copper
    • Iron
    • Potassium
    • Magnesium
    • Sodium
    • Nickel
    • Zinc
  • The ISO 22241 series provides the specifications for quality characteristics, for handling, transportation, and storage and the refilling interface as well as the test methods needed by the manufacturers of motor vehicles and their engines.
  • ISO 22241-1, Diesel engines — NOx reduction agent AUS 32 — Part 1: Quality requirements.
    • It determines the quality characteristics of the diesel exhaust fluid to ensure the proper performance of the SCR system.
  • ISO 22241-2, Diesel engines — NOx reduction agent AUS 32 — Part 2: Test methods.
    • It specifies test methods required for determining the quality characteristics of the diesel exhaust fluid.
